A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The author welcomes the birth of WaterTech USA (recently renamed Water for People). The author relates that during the International Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Decade, many wells in developing countries were constructed and equipped with hand pumps that could not be maintained by the communities. Much research, development and intercultural exchange during the next 10 years resulted in the development of simplified hand pumps that are village‐level operation and maintenance (VLOM). As the problems of providing clean water and sanitary conditions in developing countries are being redefined from this experience, the author feels that this is a most opportune time for AWWA, with its resources and large supporting industry, to enter the field.
