The authors favor the use of home water purification devices in the case of individuals whose tap water does pose a health risk or who want a less expensive alternative to bottled water. To ensure the units reliability, they suggest third‐party product testing and an effective maintenance program. The private water treatment devices industry wants to position itself as supplementing–not supplanting the work done by municipal water authorities. The authors surmise that water district managers and environmental protection officials have maintained continued resistance to supporting the use of home purification devices because of the rash of unsavory and quick‐buck charlatans who gave the industry a bad reputation in its infancy. They also acknowledge that, from a health point of view, controversy exists over who may require such a unit.
