Garden Courtyard Block
This chapter presents the history and development process of garden courtyard block. It then addresses changing trends in architecture and urban design of garden courtyard block. Italy is a young nation, unified as the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. Rome, after short interludes of first Turin and then Florence, became its capital 10 years later, once the papacy had lost the political control over the city within its tight Aurelian Walls and its less than 200,000 inhabitants. The construction of the Trionfale Quarter was determined in 1911, and was to become the first project of the ICP (Istituto Case Popolari) after San Saba and Testaccio in the northern part of the city, implemented in five development stages between 1919 and 1929. Due to the clear stipulations of the masterplan for the street and block perimeters, the ICP's design work for Trionfale could not include many morphological considerations.
