Federal Role in Water Quality Control in the United States
This article begins by providing a brief overview of the history of federal water quality control in the United States. Today, domestic water quality standards are based on the 1962 revision of the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) Drinking Water Standards. The article discusses significant changes in the standards, along with a completely new section on radioactivity. Quality standards are discussed for the following areas: industrial water; agriculture and wildlife; and, recreation. The amended Water Pollution Control Act of 1961 is discussed, along with a program by the Division of Water Supply and Pollution Control of USPHS to contain or alleviate the pollution problem, and the USPHS Water Quality Network of sampling stations for maintaining a constant check on water pollution in major U.S. waterways.
