Most architects are capable of carrying out a survey and in some instances it is crucial that it is the architect who does so. That is particularly the case if it is a building that is to be refurbished or altered because there is nothing like the discipline of producing a detailed measured survey of a building to give a thorough understanding of its construction and little idiosyncrasies. Before any kind of survey, whether of land or buildings, it is very important to obtain a plan showing the boundaries of the site. As part of the survey, a full set of photographs and videos should be taken, although it is a well understood and oft demonstrated fact that none of one's photographs will show the very thing that he/she most wants to look at when he/she returns to the office.
