Fire Safety Principles
It is fundamental to develop a knowledge on the fire‐safety strategy elements. Fire‐safety design and maintenance over time is the tool to guarantee an acceptable fire risk given a selected pool of fire scenarios. A performance can be achieved by adopting a combination of fire controls (preventive and mitigative barriers) composed in a strategy that considers the vulnerabilities. A structured thinking may be supported considering two fundamental NFPA standards (550 and 551) developed and maintained by the Fire Risk Assessment Methods Technical Committee. These standards are nowadays an important example of the holistic approach that can be used by fire engineers and stakeholders to address the complexity of the socio‐technical systems we should protect from the fire threats.
