A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
In the process of constructing a building a contractor often has to carry out a great deal of temporary work. That is work which, as the name suggests, is not usually intended to remain permanently on the site, but is constructed merely to allow the contractor to construct the permanent works which the architect has designed and specified. Examples of temporary works include roadways, trench supports, scaffolding, temporary shoring, formwork, etc. There are masses of regulations which are intended to ensure that temporary works are constructed and used safely. If bills of quantities are being used, temporary work is usually measured. Alterations to existing buildings will often require the erection of dust and noise screens to protect parts of the building, and possibly users. In such cases, temporary access may be necessary for the occupants.
