Containment of Pollution from Urban Waste Disposal Sites
Waste management is needed to protect both the environment and public health. This chapter highlights the challenges of managing urban waste, with particular emphasis on the contribution of improper waste disposal to pollution and how landfill liners are essential in protecting the environment and public health. It presents a brief overview of worldwide solid waste generation, together with the implications of improper waste disposal and how the lining of landfills can help to minimise the environmental impacts. Improper waste disposal poses risk of air, water, and soil pollution. The environmental impact of the disposal of wastes greatly relies on how effective wastes and their derivatives are contained within the waste disposal facility. The use of landfill liners ensures that public health is protected by preventing the contamination of water resources, air, and soil.
