Impact of Climate Changes on Water Resources Serious
This column discusses a report prepared by the Pacific Institute for the US Department of the Interior that concludes that climate changes in the next 100 years may have serious implications for water resources in the United States. It describes how the buildup of heat‐trapping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere over the past century, primarily from fossil fuel combustion, has substantially contributed to a temperature increase of about 2/3 degree C in the US. Climate models project that temperatures could increase another 3‐6 degrees C by 2100. Examples are given of how this increase could affect our water resources.
