A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The utilization ratio and utilization index concepts are introduced and discussed, explaining that often the standards introduce utilization indices, not utilization factors. The failure modes related to connection analysis are discussed one by one with particular reference to the provisions of Eurocode 3 and of AISC 360‐10: bolt resistance, fillet weld and penetration weld resistance, slip, pull‐out of anchors, pin resistance, bolt bearing, pin bearing, punching shear, block tear, yielding of constituents (limit load), buckling of constituents, fracture, displacement excess. Finite element techniques to check for yielding and buckling are discussed. Block tear failure mode is discussed and a more general method proposed.
