Water Reuse for Groundwater Recharge: An Overview
For many water‐short areas where planned recycling of dwindling water resources is or soon will be a necessity, artificial recharge of groundwater aquifers with reclaimed water is among the more promising approaches to reuse. When the end of the cycle is domestic consumption, however, the path is hedged with unresolved questions. What are the important health issues? What water quality standards are appropriate at the points of recharge and extraction? What alternatives are available in water reclamation technology for producing water suitable for recharge? How do these alternatives perform in practice? How does water quality change during percolation and in the groundwater zone? How much do percolation and groundwater passage contribute to overall system reliability? What benefits and problems have been experienced in practice? It was the goal of the symposium summarized here∗ to make progress toward defining and answering these questions.
