Temporary Works
The correct design and execution of temporary works is an essential element of risk prevention and mitigation in construction. On larger sites where there are a number of sub‐ and specialty contractors, the temporary works co‐ordinator (TWC) may need help in the supervision of temporary works. Temporary works need to be designed to the same high standard as permanent works in accordance with recognised engineering principles. Scaffolding tied to a building increases stability. It can also be braced laterally using façade and ledger bracing. Formwork may be part of the falsework construction and is used in four main areas: walls, columns, beams and slabs. To avoid cracking the façade, excessive movement must be eliminated by using substantial support systems which reduce/eliminate movement in any direction. Traffic movements need to be controlled and monitored to reduce waiting times both on‐site and on the adjacent highway.
