Emergency Alum Treatment of Open Reservoirs
The clarification of water by aluminum sulfate is a widely used and standard treatment operation, elementary to most water treatment engineers. However, this article discusses a unique aspect of the use of alum, not in conventional treatment plant operations, but in waters that are either in, or entering into, distribution reservoirs. The Department of Water and Power in Los Angeles, California, used powdered alum for this unique clarification operation in reservoirs on three recent occasions, and has used it to reduce turbidity of storm runoff water on many other occasions in the past. Several methods of treatment have been used, and this paper briefly reviews some of the department's experiences and the operational problems that were encountered.
