A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
How are Buildings Constructed in Earthquake Zones?
This chapter starts by looking at the ways in which built form is influenced by climate in different earthquake‐prone areas of the world, and discusses the variety of forms of vernacular architecture which have emerged. The mismatches between these forms and the need for earthquake resistance are identified. Built forms in urban areas have to respond to dense living, and lack of time for material‐gathering and for regular building maintenance. Thus, modern manufactured materials, multistorey construction and professionalisation of construction, and the use of mechanical heating and cooling methods have become the norm. The chapter briefly reviews the current methods of building for residential buildings in the different zones of highest earthquake risk across the world, with the aim of demonstrating the wide disparities which exist globally between different countries and seismic regions.
