A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism

This chapter summarizes the three design workflows of manual drawing and modeling, CADD drawing coupled with manual modeling, and building information modeling (BIM), and shows how those workflows share information among professionals. There are several strategies and tactics that a firm may consider in order to make a successful transition to a true BIM workflow. Newcomers to BIM should understand that transitioning to BIM is much more than just changing software platforms. Once a firm has acquired BIM technology, there are a variety of strategies to help ensure a successful implementation of BIM, some or all of which may be appropriate to a practice, given its particular circumstances. An important characteristic of a BIM workflow is its transformation of data sharing with others. In addition to training, firms that successfully transition to BIM might also reorganize their design processes, and even how they go about project delivery.
