The 19th‐century patio house found in Quito, the captial of Ecuador, fuses an introverted deep plan with an extrovert street facade. Two storeys in height, it is built around an internal courtyard. Just like hundreds of other Central and South American cities, Quito, officially San Francisco de Quito, was founded by the Spanish conquistadors in the early 16th century. The foundation of the city followed strict and simple rules which were established by the Spanish Court. Quito's patio houses along with the Arabic houses of the Maghreb and Beijing's siheyuans kept the geometrical perfection and aristocratic character of the inner courtyard as a major architectural element.
