A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Constellations
In terms of building information modelling (BIM), a constellation is a series of components that work together to create a single element. Building a constellation is more about standardization than it is about the components themselves. It is formatting components into a specific category so that they may be accessible through a drop‐down menu, naming the components appropriately, and using standardized insertion points for each category of object. The host component of a constellation should carry some type of base graphics that apply to the component as a whole. While setting an industry standard for development of the components will aid in improving the overall development of BIM content, the likelihood of all components actually being developed in that fashion is fairly low. This chapter discusses the development of door and cabinet objects as a constellations, it can apply to any component within the model that has multiple subcomponents that work together.
