A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Berlage‐block
This chapter presents the history and development process of Berlage‐block. It then addresses changing trends in architecture and urban design of Berlage‐block. The housing blocks of Amsterdam Zuid (Amsterdam South) demonstrate an interesting compromise between two slightly contradictory intentions: the desire for community expression as conveyed through the buildings' huge dimensions and large inner courtyards, which are juxtaposed with the private demand for separate front doors and individual gardens. In 1897, the city asked the Dutch architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage, most well‐known for his Stock Exchange building, to draw up a scheme to the south of Kalff's grid, covering an area several times larger than the historic centre. Berlage's plan for Amsterdam South has often been described as a ‘reconquest’ of the urban realm through architecture.
