Relationship between water quality in irrigation reservoirs and land use of the watershed
In Japan, the use of constructed irrigation reservoirs for paddy cultivation has been common during the past 1300 years. The reservoir size varies widely, but many are small (irrigation ponds or Tameike in Japanese). With the introduction of modern water resource systems, these small reservoirs began to be abandoned. The irrigation reservoirs, particularly the abandoned ones, are likely to receive upstream run‐off containing high concentrations of nitrogen, leading to deterioration of water quality due to eutrophication. There are cases, however, in which the citizens residing near the abandoned reservoirs show interest in preserving them for enhancing the neighbourhood water amenity. The current study examines the results of water quality surveys conducted for 12 such reservoirs and at Lake Kasumigaura. It revealed that good watershed management practices were critical for controlling eutrophication of such reservoirs.
