Mega‐Trends that Impact Water Security
Global trends in the driving forces of water cycle and climate, and the rapid growth in population, agricultural intensification, urbanization, and economic aspiration‐induced causes of water insecurity, including increased demand for food and energy, have been described. Discussions also cover water management to maximize the benefits, including improving water supply and consumption efficiency; ensuring adequate drinking water quality and waste water treatment; improving economic efficiency of services to sustain operations and investments for water, waste water, and flood water management; utilizing alternative water sources; identification of vulnerable groundwater zones; and engaging communities in the management decision‐making process.
