Art in the Roman Villa
The primary and most characteristic space for Roman art was the Roman villa. After piracy was eliminated by Pompey the Great in the first half of the first century BCE, the villae maritimae were built along almost the entire Tyrrhenian coast. Their owners built beyond the coasts and into the sea at ever greater cost. Like any cultural phenomenon, the villas spawned a literary discourse about the things that happened inside them and made them important. Sculpture and mosaic were recognized, and have subsequently been researched as, important means for creating the atmosphere of a villa. The discovery of the Villa of the Papyri is a warning against the desire to examine the meaning of individual works of art without knowledge about their original context. The Roman villa in Italy became the location of high aesthetic and artistic standards through the import of Greek culture and cultural assets.
