Overview of the Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments of 1996
On August 6, 1996, the President signed the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) amendments into law as Public Law (PL) 104‐182. The new amendments made sweeping changes to the existing SDWA, created several new programs, and included a total authorization of more than $12 billion in federal funds for various drinking water programs and activities from fiscal year (FY) 1997 through FY2003. An overview of the provisions of the amendments is presented.
