Artificial Intelligence in Elevator Dispatching
The development of artificial intelligence (AI) began when the first digital computers were invented in the 1940s. This chapter describes the use of AI in elevator dispatching with examples of real applications from the elevator industry. With elevator group controls, AI was initially associated with learning and forecasting the passenger traffic patterns, and utilizing fuzzy logic and simulation for different purposes. Characteristic to the traffic in buildings are seasonal variations. The seasonal traffic variations follow daily, weekly and annual periods. The forecast traffic patterns were used in selecting the optimization objectives in call allocation. The genetic algorithm is an iterative heuristic method that searches for the optimum from a given search space, example, from possible elevator routes. In the early intelligent group control systems, car distance of the car from the hall call floor in the travel direction was considered as the optimization objective.
