Saline‐Water Conversion: Committee Progress Report
This article discusses a comprehensive, pioneering study in the water utility field that was conducted for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) by the Bechtel Corporation and financed jointly by MWD, the Atomic Energy Commission, and the Office of Saline Water (OSW). The study proposes the use of nuclear reactors to produce steam that will generate a maximum of 750,000 kw and 150 mgd of freshwater from the sea. It is predicted that power costs may be lower than 5 mils per kilowatt‐hour and that freshwater production costs at the plant site may be 25‐35 cents per 1,000 gal.
