African Indigenous Heritage in Colonial and Postcolonial Museums
The Case of the Batwa of Africa's Great Lakes Region
This chapter discusses aspects of indigenous heritage in colonial and postcolonial museums in general, with specific examples from sub‐Saharan Africa. Problems regarding the interpretation of indigenous heritage in colonial and postcolonial museums are discussed, as well as problems regarding indigenous peoples’ rights of access to material related to their heritage conserved in different museums. The chapter discusses the role that should be played by indigenous people in the conservation, safeguarding, and interpretation of this material. Indigenous rights, heritage, and repatriation have been discussed for some time. However, this chapter discusses a new perspective, paying specific attention to the Batwa pygmies living in the African Great Lakes region, and analyses how their heritage is presented within local museums.
