Randomness and Reliability
Randomness is qualitatively treated with stochastics which embraces probabilistics and statistics. Randomness of model input parameters leads to randomness of response variables or model solutions. The model may be regarded as filter transforming distributions of parameters into distributions of responses. The evaluation of the failure probability may be generalized regarding multivariate random variables. The event of failure has a small probability and only a relatively few numbers of samples determine the approximate value of the failure probability. Concepts based on safety factors are used for practical design which are intuitive and practiced in building design based on long time experience. But safety factors should be related to failure probability in a quantitative manner.
