A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The development and establishment of computational statics
Two of the most important historico‐logical origins of computational statics can be found in the modelling of continua with trussed frameworks (gridwork method) on the one hand and the division of the continua into (continuous) finite components (finite element method) on the other. The genesis of the discipline fed by these sources is shown by way of examples from automotive and aircraft engineering. This chapter describes the three essential conditions that led to computational mechanics: the development of the computer, the creation of matrix structural analysis and the formulation of generalised variational principles. This is therefore the first complete portrayal of the development of computational statics from its beginnings to the present day.
