Some Things You Should Know About Wood, Trees, and Forests
This chapter aims to ‘set the scene’ on timber and its origins, and explores the complexities of how and why we should all seek to act ‘sustainably’ when it comes to using it. It provides a quick sketch of the distribution of tree types around the world, starting with the most northerly and ending up in the tropics. To explain the whole concept of forest in a readily understandable way, the chapter focuses on the softwood forests first, since they illustrate quite nicely most of the variations. It looks at trees which grow in so‐called ‘natural’ forests. Having mentioned the production of seedlings and their replanting, the chapter provides information on managed forests. Plantations are generally easier to manage than existing forests (either natural or managed), and they are also far easier to spot, since they usually consist of large numbers of trees of a single species.
