A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Innovations in The Design Process and Architectural Practice
This chapter focuses on the architectural design services and process, explaining how a firms’ culture, organization and operations greatly influence innovation, specifically management, research and development, financial aspects, and risks. The chapter provides an overview and recommendations for establishing a culture that supports and welcomes innovation, determining motives and goals, establishing operational models, integrating research and development, considering financial aspects and economics and managing risks in innovative practice. Architectural firms must adapt continuously to complex and changing conditions. They can survive and thrive in changing market conditions only if they are able to respond to change. Creating an environment that fosters innovation, the exchange of ideas, research and development, creative thinking, continuing education and experimentation is essential for innovative architectural practices, regardless of the size of the firm. A variety of factors have made designers’ jobs more complex, including technological advancements, changing client expectations and new design methods and processes. Innovative design practices should reinvest larger portions of their profit into activities that help them to address innovation strategies, including the development and establishment of research and development departments, employee incentives for innovative projects and results, infrastructure and equipment and marketing.
