Environmental and Ecological Imbalances in Dense Urban Areas
Urban areas are responsible for significant levels of energy consumption and global carbon emissions. However, in denser urban environments the emissions connected to transportation needs and building energy demand can be reduced. It is hence fundamental to address air pollution, the urban heat island effect, and stormwater management within cities. Sustainable urban design strategies and actions should limit the impact of anthropic activities at city‐scale and global scale. The use of green and blue infrastructure can improve water quality while reducing stormwater runoff. Vegetation in metropolitan areas can provide a wide range of benefits, enhancing human well‐being and environmental conditions by acting on both causes and effects.
