Water treatment: The past 30 years
This article focuses on the history of water treatment since the enactment of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) in 1974, until 2005. Several threads of developing technology are presented, including: bacteria to viruses to protozoa; turbidity and particle counting; synthetic chemicals and disinfection byproducts (DBPs); leaching of contaminants into drinking water; low‐pressure membrane filtration; high‐pressure membrane filtration; ozonation; and, advanced oxidation and photolysis.
