A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
From Folklore to Intangible Heritage
This chapter traces the conceptual trajectory that outlines the passage from the early study of folklore to current international endeavors to safeguard intangible cultural heritage. In order to understand transitions in terminology or disciplinary change toward the intangible, the chapter positions folklore studies between scholarship, society, and polity. The cases introduced suggest concomitant phases of epistemological identification and mapping, institutionalization and networking, translation and knowledge transfer, but also political exploitation and control, in various parts of the world. The analysis of proposed paradigmatic shifts or instrumental political implications of the new “knowledge format” discerns a circular process that problematizes this ontological transition.
