Development and Effect of the Delaware River Basin Compact
This article discusses the Delaware River Basin Contract, signed into effect on November 2, 1961 by President John F. Kennedy. It represents an interjurisdictional cooperation that recognizes the basin's water resources as regional assets vested with local, state, and national interest in which they have a joint responsibility. The two‐fold agreement benefit accruing to New York is impressive in that the commission will not trespass upon the water developments created thus far by New Yorkers in the basin, and the signatories will not further challenge the diversions permitted to New York under the Supreme Court decrees. These advantages are assured for 100 years, no small benefit even if the compact fails to be renewed thereafter.
