Prague
Urban Growth and Regional Sprawl
This chapter provides a comprehensive discussion of suburbanization in Prague's city region since the collapse of communism. It presents a general historical overview of urbanization processes and patterns. The chapter also discusses the problems of suburbanization and sprawl in metropolitan Prague in four parts. First it describes the initial period of Prague's housing boom, which peaked between 1996 and 1998. Second it documents the changing balance in the distribution of residents within the city region. The third part addresses the growth of suburban jobs related to the development of new shopping, warehousing, distribution, and logistic centers around Prague. Finally the chapter discusses the highly fragmented character of decision making related to land development and urban planning in Prague's city region, which is administratively split into over two hundreds independent municipalities in eager competition with one another for attracting new jobs and residents.
