Modern Residential Heritage in Transformation
The musealization of residential architecture is a well‐established historical phenomenon dating back to the 1850s. New paradigms began to be explored in the transformation and reuse of this particular heritage typology while the conservation of modern residential architecture has been tangibly and intangibly legitimized by international organizations, declarations, and charters, parallel to the increasing awareness, consciousness, and acceptance as early as the 1980s. The modern house museum establishes complex relationships firstly between the setting and the object, and secondly between material and immaterial aspects. Consequently, the transformation into a house museum generates new inquiries in the conservation paradigm. This chapter examines the transformational values through a series of case studies, focusing on reconstructive narratives, periodical shifts, material authenticity, and value justifications. Musealization serves not only to guide change but also to codify memory, identity, and sense of place, requiring selective consideration of social and cultural values.
