In projects of civil engineering, it is necessary to know the shearing characteristics of the soil in place. It is not always possible to recover intact samples and analyze them in the laboratory. It is, therefore, necessary to carry out tests in situ to determine the shear characteristics that are essential for the project. In the direct shear box test, a prismatic soil sample is taken, linked to the soil mass to be studied. Vane tests (VST) involve pushing two vanes, perpendicular to each other, into the ground. The vanes of the vane tester outline a cylindrical area. The results are given in the form of diagrams, which provide the undrained cohesion Cu and the residual cohesion Cr as functions of the depth. The Philiponnat phicometre test is a direct shearing test carried out into a borehole, based on a different principle from that of the vane test.
