A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Synthesis is an essential part of the overall process of most urban morphological investigations. The aim is to visualise and seek to understand the patterns of relationship between aspects and elements that make up a whole study area or settlement. There are five principal composite views that might be produced as part of a study: settlement structure; composite character, relationships and associations; experiential view; interactions, development and evolution; and stocks and flows. In cases where there are very few or no obvious traces of historical fringes, the aim of the synthesis is still to capture the process of formation resulting from polymorphogenetic accretion. At the same time, the synthesis should seek to capture the transformations of initial tissues that tend to occur over time with changing patterns of land value, use and control as well as innovations in technology.
