A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Urban planning is often based on a geometrical plan punctuated by remarkable landmarks, structuring and useful to social life, such as the agora of Greek cities, the Roman forum or the central market place, which inherited more or less the same functions in the Middle Ages. In the course of human history, conflicts and wars between communities of people, grouped in clans, cities or nations, have given rise to an incalculable number of technical innovations in a wide variety of fields. The chapter focuses on a few elements that are indispensable to contemporary urban planning analysis: the pragmatic approach of functional urban planning, the quadrangular model of the Milesian school and the reflections of Socrates and Plato on how to plan cities. The modern era covers the three centuries between the end of the Middle Ages and the French Revolution.
