Managing Time on a Construction Project
In this chapter, the importance of managing time on a construction project was overlaid with the planning function. Construction scheduling is the contractor's primary planning and control tool for managing time on a construction project. Construction schedules can be divided into two categories, in terms of the graphical method that is used to portray the scheduling information: bar charts and network schedules. The bar chart is constructed by listing the activities to be referenced in a column on the left side of the schedule. Network schedules are utilized to provide a graphic representation of the plan for the completion of the entire project, along with the critical path and other important planning information. The critical path method (CPM) uses the logic portrayed in network schedules, along with a series of calculations to determine some very important scheduling information.
