Route restructuring reduces meter‐reading costs
Computer software makes restructuring a much faster process and meter‐reading less costly.
Restructuring meter routes is one way to increase productivity and efficiency and reduce costs. The route restructuring trial described in this article was designed to quantify the benefits of using commercial restructuring software. The cost to read a meter before route restructuring (based on an average of 224 meters per day) was estimated at $0.958; after restructuring, it was $0.699 (307 meters per day), a 27 percent reduction in labor costs. Labor cost to restructure the routes was reduced by an estimated 83 percent. Used effectively, route restructuring software increases the productivity of meter readers and efficiently tracks and manages all aspects of the work.
