A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This chapter presents the leaching process of structural concretes by soft water in the environment. Typical structure cases are first introduced to illustrate the impact of long‐term leaching on structural performance and the related problems for concrete structures and facilities. The mechanism of concrete leaching is explained through the solid–liquid dissolution equilibrium in pores, and the main influential factors are analyzed comprehensively. Based on the available knowledge, two models are given for the leaching depth considering both portlandite dissolution and portlandite + calcium silicate hydrates dissolution with some simulation results provided for engineering use. The water flow condition on the concrete surface is addressed particularly for its impact on the leaching rate. The last part of chapter discusses the consequence of leaching on reinforced concrete elements and the corresponding design considerations.
