A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This chapter presents classic design approaches for lined and unlined (earthen) channels. Natural channels are ephemeral if they do not continuously flow. They are perennial if they always flow or are below the water table. Substitute appropriate channel elements into the relationship's left‐hand side and put the known values on the right‐hand side. Sustainable channels are usually designed with empirical relationships based on a design approach known as “Regime Theory,” dating back to Blench. Some engineers outside the United States employ the Chezy uniform flow equation for channel design. The Chezy equation has theoretical roots and finds usage in some conceptual work. The Manning equation roughness value is generally variable. The Manning equation was derived based on an assumption of uniform flow. The NRCS provides excellent practical information related to earthen channel installation.
