Boundary layer wind tunnel model testing – current practice
The development of the boundary layer wind tunnel in the late 20th century has led to a huge growth in their use to study not only the static and dynamic loads on structures such as tall building and long‐span bridges, but also the microclimate around new constructions such as the dispersal of smoke fumes and the impact of wind on pedestrians within and around dense city developments. Their use is thus not only for structural purposes, but also to study environmental impact and such studies are often required as part of Environmental Impact Studies required to gain planning permission for large developments.
