Know Your Building
The Importance of Accurate Knowledge of the Structural Configuration
This chapter describes all the reasons why one should leave the comfort of the office and spend a significant amount of time getting the best possible knowledge of the building under consideration. Several factors, related to incomplete information, bad detailing, poor workmanship, corrosion, and bad practices and deficiencies during construction, are analyzed and explained. The lack of transverse reinforcement is the most important problem in the majority of the cases of existing buildings, and the most common reason why a building needs strengthening. One problem commonly found in existing RC buildings is the corrosion of the reinforcement, typically caused by carbonation and/or bad casting of concrete. When analyzing existing buildings, having the construction or the as‐built drawings is always useful and helps engineers understand and measure the building. The knowledge factors are used as additional safety factors to account for the lack of knowledge of the structural configuration.
