Inspection of Structures: Methodologies
Inspection and diagnosis of structures are the most important phases of a maintenance operation and, eventually, of renovation. This chapter discusses a methodology for monitoring and diagnosing the following types of structure: bridges, structures for the retention and transportation of liquids, concrete structures located inside a fuel tank, maritime structures, silos, and concrete and metallic structures as defined in the LCPC technical guide “Gantry, metal hanger, high masts”. The management of structures is based on: recording of bridges, the project file, monitoring of structures, periodic inspections, and periodic detailed inspections. The purpose of monitoring is to assess the level of service of a structure. This service record can be classified as: normal or quasi‐normal, defective, and doubtful. The achievement of a structure inspection service requires three levels of intervention: a project manager, a structure inspector, and an inspection officer responsible for the inspection.
