Sculpture and the Public Imagination
Nineteenth‐Century Site‐Specific Art of the Cemetery, the Garden, and the Street
This chapter considers public sculptures and underscores the importance of their site and placement. Discussion includes government‐sponsored commissions for public monuments to national heroes, architectural sculpture, and the rise of the public park, city square, and garden cemetery as sites for politically charged public sculpture. Cemetery monuments could be commissioned either by public subscription or paid for through private funds, allowing the creation of sculptures that may not have represented the same agenda as the government held at the time. Since the sculptures of the cemetery, the garden, and the street were not confined to museums or private homes, they had the ability to reach a wide and varied audience. Especially after 1870, public sculptural programs were essential to building national identity, and were used to educate and edify the mass public.
