A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
In his column, AWWA Executive Director Jack Hoffbuhr talks about how politics has always influenced public health. In particular, he focuses on the Omnibus Energy Bill that calls for a phase‐out of methyl‐tertiary‐butyl‐ether (MTBE) that has been used in the past as a gasoline additive to reduce tailpipe emissions, but has been found to be an extremely damaging water pollutant that leaches into the groundwater. The Energy Bill grants immunity (”safe harbor”) from product liability lawsuits to the MTBE manufacturers for water contamination. Hoffbuhr urges all public health professionals to get involved in blocking the bill so that the $29 billion in cleanup costs will not be transferred from the polluters onto the public tax burden.
