Hydraulic Fracturing and Water Conservation
Hydraulic fracturing has emerged as an approach to extracting shale gas and oil from low‐permeability shale formations that were considered inaccessible or unprofitable. Water conservation practices in hydraulic fracturing will help to maintain environmental flows as defined by regulations. This chapter describes the history and method of hydraulic fracturing, and the current water conservation practices for hydraulic fracturing using case studies from Canada, the United States, and Argentina. Given the environmental and social implications of water use in hydraulic fracturing operations, the oil and gas industry is pursuing conservation approaches. These water conservation practices fall into three main categories: using lower quality water from non‐traditional sources; recycling and reusing produced and flowback waters; and building new infrastructure to transport water.
