Inclusive Design
Abstract: An inclusively designed and managed building or space will allow everyone to maximise their own individual abilities and enjoy full, equal, confident, independent and safe participation in everyday activities. Inclusive design goes beyond simply providing access into or out of a building or space in which those activities take place. It also covers access to facilities, information, and services – and the equality of opportunities available to everyone in education and the workplace. Achieving an appropriately designed and managed inclusive environment requires an understanding of the physical, sensory and emotional needs of those who will use it, how they will use it and how it should be managed in use.
This chapter identifies the main principles of inclusive design, and the important role of management techniques such as access strategies, access appraisals and access audits in the delivery of inclusive buildings, spaces and equal opportunities.
