Geotechnical Challenges Related to Transport Infrastructures on Sensitive Soft Clay Deposits
Transport infrastructures are normally spread across a large area, which calls for systematic ground investigation schemes that can provide an adequate characterization of soil. When a transport infrastructure is to be built on sensitive clay deposits, assessment of landslides becomes a fundamental issue. In addition to taking into account the geometrical aspects, an assessment should address issues like characterization of material, safety margins and possible post‐failure movements of sliding mass further. This chapter discusses how and why the fundamental behavior of sensitive clays can influence the geotechnical assessment of transport infrastructures such as roads or railways. It also lists the nomenclature that forms a part of the discussion. It presents the latest research results from a national R&D project called Natural Hazards: Infrastructure, Floods and Slides (NIFS), which is a collaboration between the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA), the Norwegian National Rail Administration and the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE).
